Top 10 Overrated and Underrated Things to do During Halloween

Robin Schumacher / October 2014

Overrated

1. Halloween Haunt (widely known as Fear Fest) - In my opinion, this highly

publicized event has been overrated for years, and even boring. Fear Fest is

located at Kings Island, where they transform all of the rides and buildings

into scary scream factors, such as haunted houses like Kill-Mart and

Slaughter House. Lots of people enjoy coming here, but honestly, it is not as

much fun as people make it out to be. Overall, there are so many other

original Halloween events to attend instead of being mainstream and going

to Fear Fest.

2. The Dent Schoolhouse - This haunted house is overrated because it is all

anyone ever talks about during Halloween. It is the place to be for tweens. This fright attraction is indeed scary and exhilarating, but it’s a little too crowded and over exaggerated.

3. Horror movies - I am not saying that the classic horror movies are overrated,

but rather all the recent remakes. They are boring, poorly executed, and just… not scary. If you are looking for some good scary movies try The Black

Cat or Nightmare on Elm Street.

4. Carving Pumpkins - First of all, I am not against carving pumpkins. The part

that I greatly dislike is what people carve into the pumpkins. It is always the

same things, two eyes, a nose, and a mouth with a couple front teeth. All I am saying is that if people started creating different pictures onto their

pumpkins it would make it so much more interesting, instead of the typical

tooth-faced pumpkin.

Underrated

5. Washington Park movies - Are you searching for a fun place to watch classic horror films? Washington Park is hosting a double header of classic horror movies for free every Friday until the 31st. Bring a lawn chair, blankets, and

food and enjoy a night filled of fright and fun.

6. Haunted Hallow - Instead of going to things such as the USS Nightmare and

the Dent Schoolhouse try the haunted hallow ride located in Wilmington,

Kentucky. This includes something they call The Ride, which is a haunted bus

ride through the forest. They also have the Slaughter Hotel and the

Nightmare Penitentiary, which is a prison for the criminally insane. Try your

hand at these three attractions and see if you can handle the terror…if you dare.

7. Haunted Mini Golf - During this fall season if you are looking for something

fun, and even a little kiddish to do, visit Town and Country Golf Course for

some haunted mini golf. This is an extremely cheap and easy way to do

something entertaining during this fall time. They have decorated the course

so it seems like you are golfing in a graveyard, which is very exciting.

8.  Corn Mazes - There are many farms close to our community that contain corn mazes. These are a fun activities to do with your friends and family. Also, these farms they usually have more than just the maze, they sometimes have

pumpkin patches were you could go a pick the pumpkin you want to carve.

Many also have hayrides throughout the farm, which are very enjoyable.

Many of these activities also sell apple cider and other fall treats, which are a

perfect way to relax and end the day.

9. Hallzooween - This activity is located at the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical

Gardens. Everyone is encouraged to dress up and bring their own candy bags for trick-or-treat stations located through out the park. The zoo is decorated for the fall season, which brings it to life. This is a very pleasurable activity for you, your family, and your friends to enjoy. Go see some unusual wild life with the enjoyment of some cool costumes and yummy candy.

10. Zombie Paint ball - This fun activity is located at Land of Illusion in Middletown. Zombie paint ball is where you ride in army truck and you are armed with a paint ball gun. As you ride through the forest zombies will try to attack your vehicle you have to shoot the zombies to keep them from taking over you truck.  This is a scary, yet very thrilling activity to do this Halloween.

Music Review 350

September 2014

When names like “Walk the Moon” or “5 Seconds of Summer” are thrown around in casual, everyday conversations, do you have any idea what your friends are talking about? Even if you do, do you want to be the one who’s on the ball and showing your friends all of your new favorite bands? Well the ChieftainTM staff is here to help you get to know everything music happening this fall. Several albums are going to drop in the upcoming months. For all of you Directioners, One Direction is set to release a new album sometime at the end of this year, with “Where We Are,” as its rumored name after their most recent tour. Similar to One Direction is the Australian band that’s been touring with them recently: 5 Seconds of Summer. Known by its fans as “5sos,” this band has been taking the world by storm. If you like One Direction, 5 Seconds of Summer may just be another great band for you. But if pop isn’t your thing, then indie alternative might be. Walk the Moon hasn’t released a new album since June of 2012, but this summer they announced the upcoming release of a new album. Those who are interested, start listening to this quirky Cincinnati- based band. As for country, Lady Antebellum's fifth album is almost ready for takeoff with "747" due September 30. There are many concerts coming up in these next few months. Jimmy Eat World has a concert on October 12 at Bogart’s Cinci and October 14 at Newport Music Hall, Jason Mraz performs October 15 at Palace Theatre, Bastille has a show October 17 at the US Bank Arena, American Authors plays November 2 at Newport Music Hall, and Flosstradamus has a concert November 30 at Bogart’s Cinci. If any of these sound exciting, look them up online and buy tickets before they’re sold out! If any of these bands sound interesting to you, go on YouTube when you have some free time and look into them! Who knows– you may just find your new favorite group!

Top 10 Olympic Moments

Rosie McCormick | February 2014

The Olympics are always an exciting time because of the inevitability that you will become obsessed. Even if you are not a sports fanatic, you are bound to encounter at least one (possibly extreme) sport which grabs your attention. In case you have been hiding under a rock and are therefore clueless in regards to the excitement of the past few weeks, allow me to fill you in. Here are my top 10 moments of the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics (I am American and I may be a little biased).

Number 10- Let’s begin by honoring Nick Goepper who represented the greater Cincinnati area in this year’s Olympic Games. He grew up in Hidden Valley, Indiana. Goepper learned to ski at Perfect North Slopes in Lawrenceburg, Indiana so perhaps you have run into him there. The 19-year-old has become a media darling due to his undeniable talent and his “Midwestern humility.” His talent won him the bronze in the new slopestyle skiing event.

Number 9- Adorable 15-year-old Yulia Lipnitskaya positively mesmerized the home crowd at the Iceberg Skating Palace, giving two stunning performances that helped Russia take the gold in the new event of team figure skating.

Number 8- The Canadians won two straight gold medals in women's Olympic bobsled, beating the American duo of Elana Meyers and Lauryn Williams in USA-1 by 0.10 seconds. Humphries and Moyse (Canadian gold medalists) finished a full second ahead of Jamie Greubel and Aja Evans in USA-2, the bronze winners.

Number 7- The U.S. women's hockey team delivered in their match against Sweden, pulling out a 6-1 victory. Now, they’ll be sent to compete in the gold medal match where they will face the three-time defending gold medalists of Canada.

Number 6- The Dutch dominated the women’s 1500m speed skating, led by Jorien ter Mors’ record-breaking performance. Ter Mors’ final time clocked in at 1:53.51, which broke Germany's Anni Friesinger's 1:54.02 record at the 2002 Salt Lake City Games.

Number 5- Americans swept the first-ever Olympic men’s slopestyle skiing event. Joss Christensen got the gold after spinning 1260 degrees in the air. His score was 95.80, not bad for his Olympic debut; quite impressive in fact. His teammates Gus Kenworthy and Nick Goepper won silver and bronze, respectively. As if their shiny new medals were insufficient rewards, they also received cereal box fame! Look for the boys sporting their medals on the front of Corn Flake boxes in the weeks to come.

Number 4- Gracie Gold delivered a practically flawless performance in her Olympic unveiling in the women’s free skate of the team figure skating competition. Here, she helped the U.S. win bronze, with Russia taking the gold. Gold will have to compete against reigning champion Yuna Kim of South Korea, who dominated in Vancouver, and reigning silver medalist Mao Asada of Japan for the podium this time. It will surely be a tough fight for Gold.

Number 3- Thirty four years ago, the Americans beat the Soviet Union on the ice, and this year it has happened again. On Saturday, February 15, the Americans took the Russians into overtime and ended up crushing them in a shootout. T. J. Oshie carried the team through the shootout scoring 4 of his 6 shots— victory for America and fame for T. J. Oshie.

Number 2- Sometimes it is nice to see the competition taken out by someone else. OnWednesday, February19, Finland knocked Russia out in hockey. Russian teams have won eight gold medals in hockey overall, but none in the last 22 years. Finland scored early and ended the game in a 3-1 victory, crushing the Russians’ dream of winning hockey at home in front of their own fans.

Number 1- Nicholas Alexander was spotted with a mustache-shaped American flag painted on his face during the team ski jumping large hill competition— an excellent way to show support for the USA.
